Monkstown Wood

Monkstown Wood, designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 2007, is a 9-hectare (22-acre) broadleaved woodland located between the Doagh Road's industrial area and the Monkstown housing estate in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. The serene setting along the Three Mile Water river offers visitors a peaceful retreat from urban life.

There are four entrances to Monkstown Wood, including a kissing gate and two openings next to the industrial estate and Hurtle Tout Lane. Each of these is linked to Doagh Road, along the site’s southern edge.

Reasons to Visit

• Well-marked pathways guide visitors through the woodland, featuring four lifelike oak sculptures and views of the picturesque Three Mile Water river
• Home to diverse wildlife, including otters in the river and various bird species such as willow warblers and house martins during the summer months
• In spring, the forest floor is adorned with blooms like lesser celandine, wood anemone, and cow parsley, enhancing the natural beauty of the woodland
