Bohill Forest is a quiet, unassuming woodland escape located near Drumaness, roughly four miles southeast of Ballynahinch in County Down. Spanning just under 40 hectares, this hidden gem is highly unique because a portion of it is designated as a protected National Nature Reserve. Historically clear-felled, the land has beautifully regenerated over the decades into an atmospheric mix of conifers and a lush deciduous understory packed with native oak, birch, rowan, hazel, and thick holly bushes. The reserve was specifically established to protect the rare and delicate Holly Blue butterfly, which thrives in the sunny, sheltered glades. Undisturbed and deeply peaceful, Bohill is a sanctuary for local wildlife, where red deer frequently pass through the dappled shadows.
Dogs are warmly welcomed to explore on-lead, making this peaceful haven the perfect choice for pups who prefer a quiet, scent-rich nature wander away from the crowds.
