A Rugged Coastal Adventure with History in Every Step

If your dog loves a bracing sea breeze and a path with plenty of sniffs, Orlock Point is one of the finest coastal walks in County Down. Managed by the National Trust, this 3-mile circular trail wraps around the headland, offering sweeping views across the Irish Sea to the Copeland Islands and, on a clear day, the coast of Scotland.

Why We Love It

This isn't just a flat path; it’s a journey through history and nature. From Viking heritage to WWII lookout posts, there is a lot to explore along the rocky outcrops and hidden shingle coves.

• Breathtaking Views: The elevated cliff paths provide some of the best vantage points on the North Down coast.
• Wildlife & Nature: A mosaic of habitats makes it a haven for stonechats, wildflowers, and even seals if you’re lucky.
• The "Hairy Girls": You’ll often find the resident Highland cows grazing the clifftops—they’re local celebrities!
• Archaeology: Look out for the hand-hewn "Coach Road" archway and signs of ancient settlements.

Good to Know

• Terrain: It’s a "challenging" walk with rocky paths, steep steps, and stiles. Sturdy footwear is a must.
• Dog Policy: To protect the livestock and nesting birds, dogs must be kept on a lead.
• Parking: There is a small National Trust layby (approx. 10 cars) on the Warren Road (BT19 6YU). It fills up fast on weekends!
• Facilities: No toilets or shops on-site, but you're only a 5-minute drive from the cafes of Donaghadee or Groomsport.

Top Tip: Time your walk for sunset. The light hitting the Copeland Islands is spectacular, and it's a much quieter time for a peaceful trek with your pup.
