Planning a beach day with your dog on the Causeway Coast this summer? Seasonal dog restrictions are currently in place on designated sections of several beaches across Causeway Coast and Glens.
The restrictions apply each year from 1 June until 15 September. Dogs are not allowed within the marked sections during this period, although other parts of some beaches remain accessible.
Here is what you need to know before setting off with your dog.
Which Causeway Coast beaches have dog restrictions?
Seasonal restrictions currently apply to designated areas of the following beaches:
Castlerock Beach
Dogs are not allowed on the section running from the main vehicle entrance westwards towards Black Stone Cottage.
Downhill Beach
The restricted area begins at the row of white wooden posts near the entrance to the old pillbox and continues westwards towards Benone.
Dog owners can access the beach behind the Blue Flag area, but should check the signs when arriving.
Salmon Rock Beach, Portballintrae
The restriction applies to the beach beside the car park.
Portrush West Strand
Dogs are prohibited from the section between the steps at Castle Erin and the harbour wall at South Pier.
Portrush East Strand
The restricted section runs from the Arcadia eastwards towards the stream.
Arcadia Beach
Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the small beach at the Arcadia during the restriction period.
Whiterocks Beach
The restriction applies from the beach access eastwards in the direction of Dunluce Castle.
These restrictions are legally enforceable and each affected area should have signs explaining where dogs are prohibited. (Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council)
Are dogs completely banned from these beaches?
No. Most of the restrictions apply to specific sections rather than the full length of each beach.
That distinction matters. Dogs may still be allowed outside the designated restricted area, but the boundaries differ at each location.
Check the signs at the beach rather than assuming that the entire beach is either dog friendly or dog free. Conditions and access points can also be confusing when you are unfamiliar with the area.
When do the restrictions apply?
The Causeway Coast dog beach restrictions run from:
1 June to 15 September
Outside these dates, the seasonal exclusions do not apply, although other dog control rules may remain in place. These can include requirements to keep dogs on leads in particular public spaces.
What happens if you enter a restricted area with your dog?
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council enforcement officers will patrol affected beaches throughout the summer.
Anyone who allows their dog to enter a prohibited section may receive an ยฃ80 Fixed Penalty Notice or face prosecution. The maximum fine following prosecution can be higher. (Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council)
Even when a restricted section looks empty, the rules still apply. An early morning visit or a miserable Northern Irish weather forecast does not create a loophole.
Cleaning up after your dog
Dog owners must pick up dog waste immediately and dispose of it correctly.
Once bagged, dog waste can be placed in any public bin within the borough. Leaving dog waste behind is an offence and may result in a separate ยฃ200 Fixed Penalty Notice. (Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council)
Bring more bags than you think you will need. Dogs have a remarkable talent for catching us unprepared.
