Slemish Mountain is an iconic, dramatic geological landmark rising abruptly 437 meters above the flat, rolling plains of the Braid Valley in County Antrim. The striking, rugged mountain is actually the solid dolerite plug of an ancient, extinct volcano that has resisted millions of years of glacial erosion. Today, this Environmentally Sensitive Area is a protected sanctuary for rare mountain flora and swooping birds of prey. Offering a short, sharp, and exhilarating vertical scramble, Slemish provides a thrilling alpine-style challenge packed with rich history and breathtaking panoramic views.
Dogs are welcomed on leads, offering an incredibly steep, high-intensity workout for highly agile and sure-footed hounds.
Extremely steep and rocky climb so active dogs would be best! You’re supposed to keep dogs on leads at all times but it felt unsafe for us to do so as we were worried about falling etc! There were no sheep about when we went so kept them off-lead. However, sheep are known the graze in the lower field area just after the carpark.
