If you and your dog are looking for a walk that feels truly "out of this world," Beaghmore Stone Circles is a must-visit. Nestled in the wild, heather-clad moorland of the Sperrin Mountains, this archaeological treasure trove is one of the most significant Bronze Age sites in the UK. Itโs a place where the air feels different and the history is literally under your paws, over 1,200 stones were uncovered here during peat cutting in the 1940s, revealing seven mystical stone circles and numerous alignments that experts believe were used to track the stars and the moon.
The site is wide open and incredibly atmospheric, especially on misty mornings or at sunset when the light catches the "Dragonโs Teeth" circle - a unique ring filled with over 800 small upright stones. Because itโs located in a remote rural field, itโs a fantastic spot for a quiet, contemplative stroll with your pup away from the hustle and bustle. The ground is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a great low-level walk for dogs of all ages to enjoy the fresh mountain air and the unique scents of the surrounding bogland.
Dogs must be kept on a lead, particularly because the surrounding area is often used for sheep grazing. Entry is free. While the site itself is open year-round with on-site parking, keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities at the circles, so itโs best to plan your visit as part of a larger Sperrins adventure and sometimes public access is restricted due to works for example. Check before you visit.
